Maker Principles and Technologies in Teacher Education: A National Survey
This study reports on the extent to which teacher education programs in the United States have begun to integrate maker principles and technologies. It also explores the factors which contribute to their decisions to include or not to include maker elements into their programs. Results indicate that approximately half of teacher education programs have at least some opportunities for undergraduates and graduates to learn about teaching and learning with maker technologies and principles.

Community, Difference, and Voice in Teacher Education

This article explores the ethical, methodological, and practical issues of translating critical theory and research into praxis through a case study analysis of a graduate capstone seminar that explored the familiar, and seemingly benign, concepts common to educational discourses. The author argues that while the data demonstrated that the teachers positioned their students as active, engaged, and thoughtful participants in their own learning process, three important points that speak to the seminar’s pedagogical objectives can be pulled from the data analysis. The three themes from the analysis of data stand in contrast to the seminar experience.

Teacher Education Futures: Today’s Trends, Tomorrow’s Expectations
This article investigate teacher educators’ views of current trends and their consequences for teacher education futures. The findings reported give voice to the expert participants. The data were then used to develop the discussion which comprised two scenarios. Two major fields of change are identified here and these are used to imagine different futures through the use of a two-dimensional model. The two major fields identified from the discussion are a continuum on location of teacher education, from school based to university based, and a continuum on autonomy and regulation, ranging from high government regulation to self-regulation by the profession.

Studying Teacher Preparation: The Questions that Drive Research
The present paper argues that research on teacher preparation over the last 100 years can be understood in terms of the major questions that researchers examined. This research focuses on two broad animating questions: “the policy question” and “the learning question.” The authors recommend that future research address questions that link teacher learning with student learning and teacher candidates’ beliefs and practices as well as questions that examine the relationships between research practices and social, economic and institutional power.

‘We Matter Just The Same’: Students and Pre-service Teachers Working Together in an Alternative Educational Setting
This article examines how a clinical experience in an alternative educational setting impacted both pre-service secondary teachers and the students with whom they worked. Findings indicate that for the pre-service teachers, the experience allowed them to develop a deeper understanding of learner diversity and the importance of connecting to students. For the agency students, the interactions with the pre-service teachers provided them with additional academic support, as well as resources for post-secondary education.

Postcolonial teacher education reform in Namibia: Travelling of policies and ideas
This article reviews the impact of an educational reform in Namibia in the early 1990s called the Integrated Teacher Training Programme (ITTP), which was an outcome of collaboration between the South West African People’s Organisation (SWAPO), the liberation movement and teacher educators from Sweden and other Western countries. Research questions posed concerned: (1) the ITTP’s perceived impact on the participants’ private and professional lives; and (2) the ITTP’s impact on the participants’ views on knowledge and education in relation to democracy. This follow-up study indicates that the ITTP was crucial for the participants’ professional careers and private lives. The majority saw education as a key to democracy and social transformation, and considered themselves as important actors at local, regional and national levels in forwarding these aims.

Special Education Teacher Preparation in Singapore’s Dual Education System
This article aims to describe Singapore’s dual education system as well as teacher preparation in a country that educates many students with disabilities in a separate environment. The focus will be on three of the factors critical to understanding comparative work: the goals and purposes of inclusive education and inclusive policy, the past and present state of Singapore with regard to policy and governance, and teacher training in the context of dual education.

South African Teacher Voices: Recurring Resistances and Reconstructions for Teacher Education and Development

The Struggle for the Soul of Teaching and Teacher Education in the USA
This article discusses changes over the last 40 years in teacher education in the USA. These changes have resulted in two very different strategies for improving the preparation of teachers and in substantial inequities in the distribution of the teaching force.

Retaining Public and Political Trust: Teacher Education in Scotland
The present article traces the key periods, players and events which have contributed to the shaping of the current landscape of teacher education in Scotland. The authors examine ebb and flow amongst General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), government, colleges of education and universities. The authors conclude that the rate of change in Scotland is often glacial, with two major factors contributing to that, the conservatism of the teacher unions and indirectly of the GTCS on which these unions have a majority. However, Scotland is now committed to a career-long process of professional learning with periodic review of individual teacher progress and is moving towards a profession which is qualified to postgraduate Master’s level. In all of this, the teacher education faculties in universities play a part, in partnership with schools and local authorities.
